Below is a reader-ready assessment brief suitable for an ITRA Level 3 Rope – Direct Entry Assessment, written in a clear, professional tone and aligned with typical ITRA Level 3 expectations. You can drop this straight into an assessor briefing pack or learner information sheet.
This assessment is designed to evaluate your competence as a Level 3 Rope Specialist, demonstrating advanced rigging, supervision and rescue capability in accordance with the International Technical Rescue Association (ITRA) Level 3 Rope standard. As a direct entry candidate, you are expected to arrive with the prerequisite skills, experience, and understanding necessary to perform at an advanced level without prior Level 1 or 2 certification.
During this assessment you will be required to demonstrate:
You must show a clear and accurate understanding of:
ITRA principles, terminology, and operational expectations
Rope physics, system forces, anchors, and rigging theory
Risk assessment, hazard identification, and safe-system-of-work planning
Equipment selection, inspection, compatibility, and standards
Communication protocols and team leadership in high-risk environments
Assessors may ask verbal or scenario-based questions to confirm underpinning knowledge and your ability to justify decisions.
You will be required to rig, manage, and supervise complex rope systems, including:
Multi-point anchor systems (directional, shared, equalised, high-strength)
Off-angle and non-ideal anchor solutions
Redirects, deviations, re-belays
Twin-system main and belay arrangements
Highline and tensioned systems (as required by the local Level 3 skill set)
Vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and multi-pitch transitions
All systems must be efficient, technically sound, and compliant with ITRA principles.
You must demonstrate:
Clear operational leadership under pressure
Situational awareness and decision-making
Dynamic risk assessment
Ability to brief, delegate and supervise a rope rescue team
Maintaining safety oversight while multitasking
Your leadership style must be consistent with professional rescue expectations and ensure operational safety throughout.
Scenarios may include:
Recovering a casualty from vertical, horizontal, or complex terrain
Rescue through obstacles, deviations or re-belays
Stretcher movement, packaging, and edge management
Pick-offs (from both minimal and complex rescue positions)
Managing multiple rescuers and maintaining system integrity
Assessors will observe your ability to combine technical rigging competence with casualty care, communication, and safe system control.
You will complete a series of practical scenarios designed to test your ability to:
Analyse a complex environment and plan a safe approach
Select appropriate equipment and justify system choices
Build systems efficiently, safely and in line with ITRA Level 3 requirements
Supervise a team and maintain operational control
Adapt to changing conditions, unexpected issues, and assessor injects
You must demonstrate consistency, confidence, and high-level rope rescue capability across all tasks.
At all times you must work within the following safety principles:
Maintain two forms of attachment when required
All edge, fall, equipment and environmental hazards must be managed
All systems must be checked before use
Communication must be clear, concise and recorded where applicable
Any unsafe action may result in termination of the assessment
You are responsible for your own safety, team safety, and the safety of the simulated casualty.
Your performance will be measured against the ITRA Level 3 Rope Assessment Criteria. You will be assessed on:
Technical accuracy
System efficiency
Professional conduct
Team leadership
Safety management
Ability to justify and defend decision-making
To be awarded ITRA Level 3 Rope Certification, you must demonstrate competence across all required elements.
